While Euro 2024 is in full swing, there’s plenty of transfer activity happening outside of the tournament, especially with Premier League clubs looking to balance their books before the financial year-end on June 30.
With the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules in mind, clubs are getting creative with their transfer dealings to ensure their accounts are in order. This has led to some notable transfers being agreed upon during this “unofficial deadline day” for Premier League clubs.
Chelsea, under the ownership of Todd Boehly, have once again taken center stage in the transfer market. The Blues have agreed on a £30 million deal with Leicester City for midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who will be reunited with his former manager, Enzo Maresca. Leicester is reportedly interested in Chelsea’s 18-year-old midfielder, Michael Golding, as a potential replacement for Dewsbury-Hall.

Aston Villa have bolstered their squad with the signing of Douglas Luiz from Juventus.
Archie Gray, a highly sought-after young talent, has joined Tottenham Hotspur from Leeds United.
Chelsea’s busy week also included the sale of young defender Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa for £37.5 million. The Blues wasted no time in reinvesting that money, signing teenager Omari Kellyman from Villa for £19 million. With clubs willing to sell their homegrown talent to bring in pure profit, Chelsea’s focus on signing young, homegrown players is evident.
Aston Villa, who have also been active in the transfer market, have been negotiating with multiple clubs to stay on top of their finances, despite earning a place in next season’s Champions League. It was expected that they would need to sell one of their key players, and that has come to fruition with Douglas Luiz finalizing his £42 million move to Juventus.
Leeds United, facing the reality of not securing promotion back to the Premier League, are in a similar position. They have a highly sought-after young talent in Archie Gray, who was initially linked with a move to Brentford. However, Leeds rejected a bid from the Bees, and now Tottenham are leading the race for Gray’s signature, with a £40 million deal potentially in the works.
