Belgium’s Goalkeeping Giant Takes a Stand: No More National Duty Until Tedesco Exits

Thibaut Courtois Announces Retirement from Belgian National Team

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has announced his retirement from the Belgian national team, citing his lack of confidence in current manager Domenico Tedesco.

Courtois, who has been capped 102 times by Belgium, made the announcement on social media, stating that he would not play for the national team again under Tedesco’s management.

“I feel privileged to have had the honor of wearing the national jersey. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being able to do so more than 100 times,” Courtois said. “Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management.”

Courtois was left out of the Belgium squad for Euro 2024 following a row with Tedesco last year. He was replaced by Koen Casteels for the tournament.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who has been capped 102 times by Belgium since 2011, added that the Belgian FA had accepted his position and the reasons that led to the decision.

“I regret possibly disappointing some fans but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals. Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding,” Courtois said.

Tedesco’s tactics have raised questions about whether he is the right man for the job after Belgium were eliminated by France in the last 16 of the Euros.

The Italian-born German manager began his tenure in February 2023 and signed a contract extension before the start of the Euros.

However, the team who spent nearly three years at the top of the world rankings and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup have endured mediocre results under Tedesco.

Courtois’ Statement in Full

“I want to address the Belgian fans and supporters of our national team.

“I feel immense love and pride in representing my country on the pitch, as well as every one of you who supports the Red Devils.

“I feel privileged to have had the honor of wearing the national jersey. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being able to do so more than 100 times.

“Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management. In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility.

“However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality.

“The Federation, with whom I have had several discussions, accepts my position and the reasons that led me to this painful but coherent decision.

“I regret possibly disappointing some fans, but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals.

“Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding.”
