In a recent interview, Kelly Clarkson opened up about why she won’t be taking over Katy Perry‘s spot as a judge on American Idol. The singer, who first rose to fame as the winner of the show’s inaugural season, cited her commitment to her children and her desire to be based in New York City as the main reasons for her decision.

“I can’t take on that role because I made a promise to my kids,” Clarkson shared with Entertainment Tonight on Saturday, June 8. “I want to be present in their lives as much as I can, and the role would require me to be in L.A., which is why I had to step away from The Voice. I loved my time on that show, but it’s important for me to honor my commitment to my family.”

Clarkson served as a coach on The Voice from seasons 14 to 21 and made a brief return in season 23. In 2023, she revealed that her time on the show coincided with personal struggles in her relationship with her now ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

“I was going through a lot personally during those years, and I had to put on a brave face,” Clarkson disclosed in October 2022. “It taught me a lot about my own strength, but it was also a reminder that it’s okay to not be okay all the time.”

Clarkson further elaborated on her decision to prioritize her family and her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, by relocating to New York City. “I wanted to create a life where we could enjoy each other and our surroundings,” she told ET. “We spend a lot of time in the park, and it’s important to me that my kids have this time with me. That’s why I can’t commit to Idol—my children come first.”

As of now, there has been no announcement regarding Perry’s replacement on American Idol. Perry, who has been a judge on the show since 2018, shared her plans to step away from the show earlier this year in February. “I think this will probably be my last season on Idol,” she said. “I want to go out and feel the world and maybe bring new music. Maybe I’ll come back if they’ll have me.”
