David Makes Man star Akili McDowell has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting incident that took place in a Houston, Texas, apartment complex parking lot last month.

According to deputies responded to the incident on July 20, 2024, and found an adult male victim, later identified as 20-year-old Cesar Peralta, who had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect(s) had fled the scene.

McDowell, 21, was taken into custody on Thursday, August 1, and booked into the Harris County Jail on a $400,000 bond, facing charges of murder and theft. His court appearance for the theft charge is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, and for the murder charge on October 9.

In a statement, McDowell’s manager Jonell Whitt expressed sympathy for those affected by the tragedy, saying, “[T]his is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy. I respectfully have no comment at this time.”

McDowell is best known for his starring role in David Makes Man, where he played the titular character. In a 2019 interview, McDowell opened up about how he related to David, saying, “That’s why it was so important to me that I get this audition because, honestly, with David being raised by a single mother and him feeling like he had to be the man of the house at such an early age and make all these grown folks’ decisions and things like that, I’ve also felt like that in my life.”
