Newcastle United Eyeing Marc Guehi as Eddie Howe Seeks Transfer Breakthrough
Eddie Howe is hoping for a transfer breakthrough at Newcastle United, with the club making an approach to Crystal Palace for England defender Marc Guehi. The 24-year-old, who impressed in Euro 2024, could command a fee of over £60 million.
Howe was asked about the potential deal after his team’s 2-0 defeat to Yokohama F Marinos in Japan. “Our efforts in the transfer market are ongoing,” he said. “I’m out of touch with all of those movements. I know we’re trying. Hopefully, we can bring you news soon. I’m not going to talk about individual deals.”
Newcastle United are also interested in Sheffield United forward William Osula, who would cost £10 million with up to £5 million in add-ons.
The club is likely to face competition for Guehi from other Premier League clubs. Newcastle United are in need of defensive reinforcements, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles out until late this year due to ACL injuries.
Howe’s team was beaten 2-0 by Yokohama F Marinos, with Alexander Isak causing some early problems for the home team. However, the team faded after going behind, and Howe made seven changes at halftime.
“Good test for us, difficult game,” Howe said. “Very good opposition. I thought we started brightly, and then faded after we conceded. So lots of stuff to work on and improve. Overall, disappointed with the result, of course, but pleased that we’ve come through with no injuries.”
Lloyd Kelly made his Newcastle debut in the game, and Howe was pleased with his performance. “I thought he did well. Composed debut. I was pleased for him. I was pleased with certain aspects.”
The club will be hoping to bounce back from the defeat and make progress in the transfer market. With the new season approaching, Newcastle United are eager to strengthen their squad and make a strong push for the top half of the table.
