Midfield Maestro Eyes Three Lions Debut After Battling Back from Fitness Nightmare

Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock has a constant reminder of his lofty ambitions every time he glances at his mobile phone.

The 24-year-old, who has been sidelined for much of the past season due to injuries, is determined to make up for lost time and has set his sights on a maiden England call-up.

Willock made his long-awaited return to action in Newcastle’s 4-1 pre-season friendly win over Urawa Red Diamonds in Saitama, Japan, and wasted no time in making an impact.

Within three minutes of his introduction, Willock set up the opening goal for Alexander Isak, and later provided an assist for Jacob Murphy in the first half.

Willock’s frustrating spell on the sidelines has only strengthened his resolve to succeed this season.

“I’m really grateful for the staff at Newcastle, and everyone that has helped me to get here, and hopefully now I can continue playing and go into the season strong,” Willock said.

The quietly-spoken player is determined to let his performances do the talking, and has set his sights on a senior international call-up.

“I’ve got my goals and my targets,” Willock said. “It’s just about getting my head down, and trying to push on this season. It’s a big one for me, and hopefully I can show what I’m capable of.”

Willock’s aspirations for the season are emblazoned on his mobile screensaver, serving as a constant reminder of what he hopes to achieve.

“100%, I’ve got my screensaver on my phone as my aspirations for the season, and to play for my country is one of the biggest aspirations I have,” Willock said.

England’s run to the final of Euro 2024 has only whetted Willock’s appetite for international football.

“England’s one of the best teams in the world, so to be involved – that’s my dream,” Willock said.

“I’ll take it day-by-day for my club, and hopefully, one day, I’ll get the opportunity – and I’ll be very proud.”

Willock was frustrated to have missed much of last season, but is determined to put that behind him and focus on the new campaign.

“It was a season where we were back in Europe, and it was massive, so I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t play a big part in it, but that’s football,” Willock said.

“I’m 24, so I’m pushing on now, putting that behind me, and giving everything for the badge to help my team-mates.”

Willock has hailed Eddie Howe as a “tremendous coach” and is grateful for the support he received during his injury layoff.

“He’s a tremendous coach, and a tremendous human being,” Willock said.

“Through my injury, he’s always supported me, and you can always knock on his door.”

“I think it’s going to be a really good season for us, and we’re looking forward to it, feeling really fit, and hopefully we can meet our goals this season.”
