Toffees’ Titans: Who Reigns Supreme Among Everton’s All-Time Greats?

Everton’s Greatest Player of All Time: A Legendary Lineup

Mail Sport, in collaboration with our readers, is on a mission to find the greatest player of all time at each of the 20 Premier League clubs. Today, we’re shining the spotlight on the legendary figures of Everton, from the iconic Dixie Dean to the modern-day hero, Duncan Ferguson.

Everton, one of the league’s founder members, has spent a record 121 years in the top division, earning the nickname “the grand old team to play for.” With a rich history of talented players, it’s no easy feat to choose just one as the greatest of all time.

Dixie Dean, the legendary striker, scored an astonishing 60 league goals in the 1927-28 season, a record that still stands today. His impressive career with the Toffees saw him net a total of 383 goals, more than double that of any other player.

Tommy Lawton, another prolific striker, became the First Division’s top scorer in 1938 and 1939 before the Second World War interrupted his career. His impressive form led to a move to Chelsea when football resumed in 1945.

Dave Hickson, a swashbuckling centre-forward, was a fan favorite during the 1950s, and Ray Wilson, a talented left-back, was part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team.

The 1970s saw the emergence of Bob Latchford, who became a national figure by scoring 30 league goals in the 1977-78 season, a feat that had not been achieved in six years.

The 1980s were a golden period for Everton, with Howard Kendall leading the team to two league championships, the FA Cup, and the European Cup-Winners’ Cup in three years. Neville Southall, widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, played a crucial role in the team’s success.

Graeme Sharp, a clinical striker, formed a deadly partnership with Andy Gray, and Kevin Sheedy, with his pinpoint left foot, was a valuable asset to the team.

Duncan Ferguson, the last player to qualify for the shortlist from the modern era, was a fan favorite and went on to become an integral part of the team that won the FA Cup in 1995.
