Sandro Tonali Set to Return from 10-Month Ban with Newcastle United
- Tonali’s ban for betting offences is set to end in a month
- He has not had any game time in pre-season
- Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe expects him to make a positive impact upon his return
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is gearing up to make his comeback after serving a 10-month ban for betting offences. The Italian international, who signed from AC Milan for £52million last summer, is eligible to play competitive football again from August 27.
Tonali has been putting in the work behind the scenes, and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has praised the midfielder’s attitude and dedication during his long absence.
“He’s been first class,” said Howe. “Mentally, I think he’s been excellent during this long period. I think he’s trained really well.”

Howe expects Tonali to get back up to speed quickly when he returns to the pitch, but acknowledges that he will need some time to regain his match fitness.
“I expect, with the way he’s trained, for him to get up to speed quite quickly, but I do think there needs to be a certain amount of understanding that there’s just been no way for us to get him the games that he needs into his legs,” said Howe.
Tonali, who made 12 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal for Newcastle before his ban, is currently in Japan with his team-mates.
Meanwhile, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka have linked up with the squad in Tokyo after being given extended breaks following their summer exploits with Brazil and Slovakia respectively.
Tonali’s return will be a significant boost for Newcastle United, and Howe is confident that the Italian midfielder will make a positive impact upon his return.
“He looks fit and very focused. He’s a big player for us,” said Howe.
