The Royal Breakup: Prince William’s Emotional 30-Minute Phone Call with Kate Middleton
Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton had a tumultuous relationship before their engagement, with a particularly emotional breakup in 2007. According to royal expert Robert Jobson, the split was initiated by William in a 30-minute phone call, which left Kate devastated.
In his forthcoming book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, Jobson reveals that the phone call took place after William backed out of New Year’s Eve plans with Kate in 2007. The prince told Kate that he needed “a bit of space” to “find our own way,” leaving Kate feeling disappointed and lost.
The book claims that William admitted to Kate that he was unable to commit to marriage, which deepened her sense of disappointment. Kate felt let down not only by William’s decision but also by the fact that he chose to handle the situation over the phone rather than face-to-face.
The world watched in awe as Prince William and Princess Kate wed at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011, but few knew about the ups and downs of their relationship. Kate and William first met 10 years prior while studying history at Scotland’s University of St Andrews, and their relationship was more on-and-off than royal watchers might be aware.

The book reveals that William had given Kate “an assurance that he would commit formally when he felt the time was right.” The prince eventually proposed to Kate during an October 2010 trip to Kenya, and they got married in an April 2011 royal wedding celebration. They have since welcomed three kids: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
Despite their past hardships, Jobson told Us Weekly that William and Kate have “a very important relationship.” “They talk a lot,” he said. “I think that they’re very much very close friends and advisors and partners as well as lovers and husband and wife.”
