‘Veep’ Creator Sets the Record Straight
No Inspiration from Kamala Harris, He Says
A Lesson in Crafting Unsettlingly Realistic TV
Kamala Harris’s presidential bid may have inadvertently boosted viewership of the hit TV show “Veep”, but its creator, Armando Iannucci, is adamant that any similarities between Harris and the show’s protagonist, Selina Meyer, are purely coincidental.
In a recent interview with a prominent publication, Iannucci revealed that he understands why people might draw parallels between the two – a female senator rising to the vice presidency before assuming the presidency – but he insists that it’s all just a remarkable coincidence.
So, what’s the secret to crafting TV shows that seem to uncannily predict real-life events? According to Iannucci, it’s all about meticulous research and attention to detail.
Iannucci explained that he and the cast of “Veep” spent countless hours consulting with individuals from the world of politics to create an authentic portrayal, including former staffers from the Vice President’s office.
Interestingly, Iannucci views Selina Meyer as a shadow of Donald Trump, citing her vanity and vengeful nature – and he’s keen to dispel any notion that he based her character on the Democratic presidential nominee.
As we previously reported, “Veep” experienced a significant surge in viewership – over 300% – following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential election and his subsequent endorsement of Kamala Harris. While the show’s success might be seen as a testament to its uncanny realism, it’s worth noting that Meyer’s questionable character traits aren’t exactly a flattering comparison.
Iannucci expressed his support for Kamala Harris, adding that he hopes viewers won’t hold Selina Meyer’s flaws against her.
