Whiz Kid Turned Forgotten Star: Liverpool’s Record-Breaker Seeks Redemption in Lower Leagues

Former Liverpool midfielder Ben Woodburn has joined League Two club Salford City, marking a new chapter in his career.

Woodburn, now 24, made history in 2016 by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer at just 17 years and 45 days old. However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for the Reds and was eventually let go in 2022.

Despite breaking Michael Owen’s long-standing record, Woodburn’s career has been marked by inconsistency and loan spells. He spent the last two seasons with Preston North End, but fell into a bit-part role and was released this summer.

Now, Woodburn has signed with Salford City, where he will be reunited with manager Karl Robinson, who had him on loan at Oxford United. Robinson believes Woodburn still has the potential to fulfill his early promise and is eager to help him get back on track.

Woodburn has earned 11 caps for Wales, although his last appearance was in 2021. He will be looking to revive his international career with a strong showing for Salford City.

Salford City has been busy in the transfer market this summer, adding experienced players like James Chester, a former Manchester United and Premier League star, and Cole Stockton to their ranks.

The club, co-owned by Gary Neville and other members of Manchester United’s Class of 92, is aiming to secure promotion to League One after a disappointing 20th-place finish last season.

Manager Karl Robinson, who has a promotion on his CV from his time at MK Dons, will be relying on Woodburn to help the team achieve their goals.

Despite not being able to secure promotion to the Championship during his five-year stint with Oxford United, Robinson is confident that he can help Salford City achieve their ambitions.

Woodburn’s move to Salford City is a fresh start for the talented midfielder, who is eager to prove himself and get his career back on track.
