Newcastle Offers Reassurances to Eddie Howe Amidst England Job Speculation
Newcastle United has reportedly held talks with manager Eddie Howe to address concerns regarding his role at the club, amidst speculation that he could succeed Gareth Southgate as England’s national team coach.
Howe, 46, emerged as the bookies’ favorite to take the vacant England job after Southgate stepped down following the Euro 2024 final defeat. The Newcastle boss fueled the speculation last week when he expressed concerns about his ability to continue at St James’ Park, citing the need to work freely in the way he wants.
The concerns reportedly alarmed club officials, leading to a meeting to clarify his position at the club. According to The Telegraph, the talks were led by club CEO Darren Eales, with Howe receiving assurances that he will remain a key figure in the Magpies’ transfer policy despite the recent addition of sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Howe was also promised backing in the transfer market, despite narrowly missing out on securing European football last season. The discussions reportedly placated Howe, and the club is confident that he will remain in charge for the coming campaign despite the ongoing England speculation.
Outgoings were also discussed, with England international Kieran Trippier believed to be on his way out of the club amid interest from Saudi Arabia. Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron, and Callum Wilson could also be set for departures this summer.

Howe replaced Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager in November 2021, just weeks after the Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover. In his first full season in charge, he led the Magpies to fourth in the Premier League, securing Champions League football for the club for the first time in two decades.
Drawn in a group of death including Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and AC Milan, Newcastle was eliminated at the group stage last season but not before securing a memorable 4-1 win over the French champions at St James’ Park.
