Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup Semi-Final Shirt Up for Auction
Sotheby’s is set to auction off Diego Maradona’s iconic match-worn 1986 World Cup semi-final shirt, with an estimated value of between £620,000 and £926,000.
The Argentine legend scored twice in the semi-final, helping his team defeat Belgium 2-0, and later led Argentina to victory in the final against West Germany. After the match, Maradona swapped his shirt with Belgium goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, signing it “For the great Jean-Marie, with all my love.”
The shirt has been on display at Pfaff’s pop-up football memorabilia museum, where it has been showcased alongside other footballing treasures. Pfaff has now decided to bring the shirt to auction, saying, “I’ve treasured this shirt for nearly four decades, ever since Diego and I exchanged items after that unforgettable semi-final. Competing against one of football’s greatest players was an honour, but calling him a friend was even more special.”
The shirt is considered one of the most valuable football shirts in the world, with Sotheby’s previously selling Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey for £7.2m in May 2022. Brahm Watcher, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables, said, “Maradona is rightly remembered as one of the greatest footballers of all time, and Sotheby’s is honoured to be part of this iconic match-worn World Cup shirt’s history.”
The shirt will be on public view at Sotheby’s in New York from July 26 to July 30.

The auction is expected to attract football fans and collectors from around the world, with the shirt’s value likely to be driven by its rarity and historical significance.
