A solemn vigil honoring the memory of Minnesota Vikings cornerback Khyree Jackson, who tragically lost his life in a car accident, was marred by further tragedy as a shooting incident unfolded, claiming the life of one individual and injuring another.
The vigil, held at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Maryland, intended to pay tribute to Jackson and his fellow car crash victims, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., all of whom were standout players on the school’s football team.
A shooting occurred after a vigil for Khyree Jackson, claiming one life and injuring another.
His high school teammates Anthony Lytton Jr. (L) and Isaiah Hazel (R) also perished in the accident.
The three young men lost their lives in the early hours of July 6 when their vehicle was struck by a woman, later identified as Cori Clingman, who was attempting a high-speed lane change. Authorities suspect that alcohol may have played a role in the collision.
As for the shooting that unfolded after the vigil, it took place in the parking lot in front of the school, according to Fox 5 DC. One victim sustained a leg injury, while the other was struck in the chest. A gun was recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made thus far.
Captain Sukhjit Batth, acting commander for the major crimes division of the Prince George’s County Police Department, described the vigil as ‘peaceful’ and explained that officers had left once the crowd began to disperse. However, they were promptly called back to the scene upon hearing gunshots.
‘They were flagged down by citizens who were actually performing life-saving measures on an adult female victim,’ Batth said. ‘Officers located another adult male victim and, with the help of our citizens on the scene, started performing life-saving measures.’
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the adult male victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The female victim is expected to survive.
Jackson, a talented athlete drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the NFL Draft this April, was expected to make significant contributions to the team’s secondary during his rookie season.
