Minnie Driver is an open book. In a recent interview with a British publication, the Good Will Hunting actress reflected on her past relationship with actor Josh Brolin.
Driver and Brolin, known for his role in Dune, were engaged for a brief period in 2001, but their relationship ended after just five months. Looking back, Driver shared that marrying Brolin would have been “the biggest mistake” she could have made.
The Ella Enchanted star also opened up about her parents’ influence on her view of relationships. Her parents, Gaynor and Charles, never married due to her father’s infidelity, which Driver says shaped her own approach to love and marriage.
Driver shared that her parents’ relationship made her long for marriage, but she often found herself with partners who were not suited for commitment. However, she has now found happiness with her current partner, the American writer and director Addison O’Dea, whom she describes as devoted and loving.
The Serpent Queen actress also discussed her decision to take a step back from films after the birth of her son Henry in 2008. Driver consciously chose to focus on more stable television roles to provide a sense of certainty and stability for her son, which she felt was lacking in her own childhood.
Driver wanted to provide Henry with a different experience, so she consciously chose to pursue television roles that offered a regular wage and allowed her to stay closer to home. This led to prominent roles in shows like Will & Grace, About a Boy, and Speechless.
In doing so, Driver was able to give her son the stability and certainty she felt he deserved, and in the process, she was also able to give herself the sense of security she had longed for in her own childhood.
Minnie Driver’s interview offers a glimpse into how her past experiences have shaped her present, and how she has consciously worked to create a different future for herself and her son.
