Free agent safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. has been handed a six-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. The suspension will only be enforced if and when Gipson joins a team, as he is currently a free agent following his release from the San Francisco 49ers at the end of last season.
Despite this, Gipson is permitted to take part in preseason activities, including games, should he sign with a team. The 33-year-old safety has been a consistent presence in the league, starting 165 out of 173 games played across 12 seasons. He has accumulated 684 tackles, 33 interceptions, and three touchdowns during his career, with his standout performance earning him a Pro Bowl selection in 2014 while playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Tashaun Gibson, captured in a playful moment with his children, has been suspended for performance-enhancing drug use.
Gipson’s most recent stint was with the 49ers, where he started all 33 games across two seasons, recording 121 tackles and six interceptions. He gained attention last season for his comments about Patrick Mahomes while mic’d up on the sidelines, stating, “Pat is just a regular QB, bro. He’s regular, and we’re going to make his [expletive] look regular. Keep doing it.”
Gipson is a free agent after his recent release from the San Francisco 49ers.
However, Mahomes and the Chiefs ultimately secured a 25-22 overtime win and their second consecutive championship title. During the Chiefs’ victory parade, Mahomes jokingly acknowledged Gipson’s comments, saying, “I’m a regular quarterback, it is what it is.”
Gipson’s impressive career includes a Super Bowl appearance with the 49ers and a Pro Bowl selection with the Browns.
Gipson’s suspension serves as a reminder of the league’s strict policies regarding performance-enhancing substances. As he seeks a new team, Gipson will have to put this setback behind him and focus on showcasing his skills and experience to potential suitors.
