Germany’s Antonio Rudiger is at risk of missing the Euro 2024 semi-final if his team advances past Spain in the quarter-final. Rudiger received a yellow card for a challenge on Spanish striker Dani Olmo, adding to the one he received during the group stage against Hungary. UEFA rules state that a player receiving two yellow cards will be suspended for one match, and yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-finals.
Spain started the match strongly, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal leading a dangerous attack. He found Morata, who played a ball into Olmo, prompting Rudiger to bring him down on the edge of the box. Referee Anthony Taylor showed Rudiger a yellow card, and Spain was awarded a free-kick.
Ally McCoist, covering the match for ITV, questioned Rudiger’s decision to bring Olmo down, noting that Joshua Kimmich was providing cover behind him. Yamal took the resulting free-kick, curling his shot just wide of the uprights.
Rudiger now faces the possibility of missing the semi-final if Germany defeats Spain. He is not alone, as teammate Robert Andrich and Spain’s Dani Carvajal, Dani Vivian, and Alvaro Morata are also at risk of suspension, having received yellow cards prior to this match.
The outcome of the Germany-Spain match will determine Rudiger’s fate, with more updates to follow.
