Spain Suffer Early Setback in Euro 2024 Quarter-Final Against Germany: Pedri’s Night Cut Short After a Robust Encounter With Toni Kroos

Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign has been dealt an early setback, with rising star Pedri sustaining an injury just eight minutes into their quarter-final showdown with Germany, forcing an early substitution.

The Barcelona prodigy’s evening ended prematurely after a robust challenge from German midfielder Toni Kroos. Despite Kroos’ successful retrieval of the ball, referee Anthony Taylor deemed the tackle too forceful and awarded Spain a free kick.

Pedri, clearly in distress, received medical attention on the field and attempted to continue playing. However, just four minutes after the incident, Spain’s manager made the difficult decision to substitute the young midfielder, casting doubt on his availability for the remainder of the tournament, should Spain advance.

Pedri has endured an injury-plagued season with Barcelona, limited to just 24 LaLiga appearances due to a hamstring issue. In this instance, he appeared to fall heavily on his shoulder, but it was his knee that drew his attention as he clutched it in discomfort while receiving treatment.

The 21-year-old’s distress was evident as he left the pitch, burying his head in his hands. Prior to the Germany match, Pedri had started in three of Spain’s four games, sitting out only their victory over Albania as they had already secured their place in the knockout stage.

Spain entered the tournament without Pedri’s Barcelona teammate Gavi, who has been sidelined since November with a cruciate ligament tear. Should Spain advance past Germany and Pedri recover in time, they would face either France or Portugal in the semi-finals.
