Taylor Swift has become the unofficial queen of Independence Day celebrations. However, this year, her traditional bash won’t take place at her Rhode Island estate as she’ll be performing in Amsterdam as part of her Eras Tour. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of her most memorable July 4th parties.
Swift started hosting her annual July 4th parties back in 2013, just two months after purchasing her $17 million mansion in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. She kicked off the tradition by inviting her Red Tour dancers to celebrate America’s birthday with a day of volleyball, face painting, and fun in the sun.
“Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays of the year,” Swift revealed on her blog, sharing photos from the outdoor festivities. The singer and her guests donned red, white, and blue outfits, embracing the patriotic spirit of the day.
The following year, Swift’s guest list expanded to include celebrity friends like Lena Dunham, Emma Stone, and Jamie King. The 2014 bash featured a giant slip and slide and a refreshing dip in the ocean, making it an unforgettable summer celebration.
In 2015, Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, and singer Serayah joined the fun. Hunt shared a series of Polaroids from the weekend, captioning them with “My ladies .” The guests even rocked patriotic onesies at one point, and Swift showed off her baking skills. Joe Jonas, Swift’s ex from 2008, was also in attendance as he was dating Hadid at the time.
However, it was Swift’s fourth party that truly cemented her Rhode Island home as the place to be on Independence Day. At the time, she was dating Tom Hiddleston, who was photographed wearing an “I Heart T.S.” tank top while swimming in the ocean with the musician.
Hiddleston later clarified the context of the infamous tank top, telling GQ in a 2017 profile, “The truth is, it was the 4th of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back… And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, ‘Does anyone have a T-shirt?’ And one of her friends said, ‘I’ve got this’… And we all laughed about it. It was a joke.”
Swift, who split from Hiddleston in September 2016, wore a red bathing suit with “America” emblazoned on the top, embracing her patriotic spirit. The guest list for that year’s party was star-studded, including the likes of Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Cara Delevingne, Ruby Rose, Este Haim, Karlie Kloss, and Swift’s childhood friend Abigail Anderson.
Ed Sheeran and Uzo Aduba were also part of the festivities. Aduba shared a photo from the weekend on Instagram, captioning it, “When NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ comes on and you all STILL know the choreography! #happy4th,” showcasing the crew’s dance moves by the pool.
After the 2016 celebration, Swift took a break from hosting her annual bash, coinciding with her relationship with Joe Alwyn. The couple, who dated from 2017 to spring 2023, often kept their romance out of the spotlight.
Swift briefly dated Matty Healy after her split from Alwyn, but the romance didn’t last. In July 2023, Swift quietly brought back her Independence Day tradition, hosting a low-key girls’ weekend with BFFs including Selena Gomez, Este Haim, Danielle Haim, and Alana Haim. She hinted at her single status in the social media caption, writing, “Happy belated Independence Day from your local neighborhood independent girlies .”
Gomez shared her appreciation for the girl time, writing on Instagram, “Sometimes you need to be around empowering, kind, and kickass gals. I needed that.”
Although Swift revived her 4th of July tradition last year, fans will have to wait until 2025 for a possible follow-up. This year, Swift will be performing in Amsterdam on Independence Day, kicking off a series of Eras Tour shows in the country.
