Reality TV star Sarah Becker has passed away at the age of 52.
Becker rose to fame on season 5 of the iconic MTV series, The Real World, which was set in Miami and aired in 1996. A family member confirmed to TMZ that Becker died by suicide last week at her home in Illinois.
According to her family, Becker had relocated to Illinois the previous year to care for her mother and sister, although she had intended to eventually return to California. In the lead-up to her passing, Becker reportedly grappled with mental health struggles and was involved in a skateboarding accident.
At the age of 25, Becker joined the cast of The Real World in 1996, introducing herself as a “19-year-old trapped in a 25-year-old body.” Hailing from La Jolla, California, she was working in the comic book industry at the time, specifically for Wildstorm Productions, a comic book imprint.
Fans of The Real World may recall Becker bringing a puppy back to the house in the 13th episode, whom she affectionately named Leroy. She shared the screen with fellow cast members Dan Renzi, Melissa PadrĂ³n, Joe Patane, Cynthia Roberts, Flora Alekseyeva, and Mike Lambert.
Upon hearing the news of Becker’s passing, friends and colleagues took to social media to share their memories of the beloved star. “Sarah Becker radiated sunshine… Her energy and positivity filled any room she entered, and her warmth left a lasting impression,” Daniel Norton wrote in a Facebook post. “I cherish the adventures and laughter we shared. Sending love and condolences to her family and all who knew her.”
Norton also reflected on Becker’s unique ability to leave a lasting impression on those she met. “I believe Sarah had a gift for creating fond memories and funny stories. She had a way of making every encounter memorable, and that was her superpower,” he added.
Another friend, Joel Benjamin, shared a series of photos of Becker via Facebook, along with a heartfelt message. “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the kindest souls I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” he wrote. “Every time I think of her, I see her radiant smile and feel her bubbly personality. You were loved and will be sorely missed.”
Author Jeff Mariotte also paid tribute to Becker on Facebook. “It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of one of the most beloved members of the WildStorm family, Sarah Becker,” he wrote. “Even if you weren’t a fan of comics in the 90s, you might remember her from The Real World, including the opening episode of her season, parts of which were filmed in our offices and at Sarah’s unforgettable going-away party.”
Mariotte concluded, “Sarah brought joy and light wherever she went. She was adored by fans and loved by all who knew her. May she rest in peace, and may her memory be a beacon of sunshine for all who knew her.”
