New York Jets cornerback Tae Hayes was taken into custody early Sunday morning in Alabama and charged with marijuana possession. According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Hayes was temporarily detained before being released on a $300 bond.
The Jets organization released a statement acknowledging the situation and stating that they will refrain from further comment as it is an ongoing legal matter. Hayes, who joined the team’s practice squad in October 2023, made a single appearance for the Jets last season.

The 26-year-old athlete has had stints with nine different NFL teams since going undrafted out of Appalachian State college in 2019. He most recently played for the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions. Hayes also experienced success in the USFL, winning a championship with the Birmingham Stallions in 2022.
Despite his journeyman career, Hayes has only managed to accrue 14 NFL appearances, all of which were in a reserve role. As the Jets prepare for their preseason training camp, set to commence on July 23, they will be hoping for a more successful 2024 season. The previous year saw them struggle after marquee quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the opening game against the Buffalo Bills.
