Tiffany Haddish is reflecting on her November 2023 arrest for driving under the influence, sharing her unique experience of being booked and jailed in Beverly Hills.
The acclaimed comedian, known for her role in Girls Trip, was charged with two misdemeanors following the incident but accepted a plea deal, ultimately pleading no contest to a “wet reckless” charge. Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel Live in June 2024, Haddish offered a candid account of her time in police custody.
“If I ever find myself on the wrong side of the law again, I know exactly where I’d like it to happen,” she joked, marveling at the opulence of the Beverly Hills police station. “I must admit, it was the most beautiful station I’ve ever seen. Quite the upgrade from my previous experiences.”
Haddish went on to describe the amenities of her jail cell, noting the sparkling water from the sink and the call button, as well as what appeared to be organic rice paper toilet tissue, indicating the level of funding behind such luxuries.
The 44-year-old talent also provided context for her arrest, recounting a busy day that began with an early morning workout and culminated in serving food to the homeless. After a full day of giving back, she received a call from a wealthy friend requesting leftover food. Despite her initial intentions, Haddish acknowledged that, in hindsight, sending the food via a rideshare service would have been a wiser choice.
“I wanted to deliver it myself because I saw an opportunity to discuss business,” she explained. “But yes, I had a drink, and I was very tired.”
Haddish went on to praise the safety features of her Tesla vehicle, crediting it with potentially saving her life by pulling over and parking when it sensed her drowsiness.
Since the incident, Haddish has embraced sobriety and celibacy. In an interview with Extra, she affirmed her commitment to abstaining from alcohol, joking that she might reconsider if she gets engaged and wants to showcase her “crazy” side. As for celibacy, she told People that it goes hand in hand with her sobriety, as alcohol had previously influenced her decisions regarding intimacy.
However, in a later conversation with Extra, Haddish clarified that she is still actively dating, simply choosing to refrain from physical intimacy. “I love a free meal,” she quipped.
