Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan proudly embraces her body and is an advocate for positive self-image. At a fan screening in Dublin, Ireland, on June 6, Coughlan had a humorous response to a comment about her role as Penelope Featherington in the Regency period drama, known for its intimate scenes.
With wit and charm, Coughlan quipped, “You know, it’s challenging because I think women with my body type – women with perfect curves – don’t often see themselves represented on screen.” She continued, “I am a proud member of the perfect curves community, and I hope you enjoy seeing them,” receiving raucous applause and laughter from the audience at the Light House Cinema.

In an interview with Stylist magazine, Coughlan shared that she specifically requested certain lines and moments in the show to empower herself and respond to negative comments about her body. “I felt beautiful in those moments,” she added.
Coughlan, 37, also shared her thoughts on filming intimate scenes with Luke Newton, who portrays Penelope’s love interest, Colin Bridgerton. While she finds these scenes empowering, she admitted that she’s not looking forward to her family watching them. “I’ll let them watch, but I won’t be there,” she said, adding, “A bit of Irish-style denial when I’m back home.”
Coughlan’s bold and unapologetic attitude towards her body image and her character’s intimate scenes in Bridgerton season 3 is a testament to her confidence and a powerful message to women everywhere. Catch the second part of Bridgerton season 3 on Netflix on Thursday, June 13, and witness Coughlan’s empowering performance for yourself.
