Luke Shaw is nearing a return to full training, providing a significant boost to Gareth Southgate and England’s Euro 2024 campaign. Shaw, the only recognized left-back in England’s squad, has been sidelined since mid-February with a hamstring injury. It is expected that he will soon resume full contact training, although he is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s match against Serbia. The Manchester United defender could, however, be named in the squad for the upcoming game against Denmark.
Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka’s fitness has become a concern. The Arsenal star missed the season finale against Everton due to a groin injury sustained during shooting practice. While he is expected to be fit for the Serbia game, there are doubts about his match sharpness. Saka is usually a guaranteed starter for England, and the coaching staff will closely monitor his progress before finalizing the starting lineup.
Saka came off the bench in the friendly against Iceland, playing just 25 minutes of football since May 12. He, Shaw, John Stones, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Harry Kane are among the players carrying fitness concerns into the tournament.
