Aussie football icon Robbie Slater has criticized Network 10 for their handling of the Socceroos, suggesting that the network is prioritizing profits from the Matildas’ popularity. Slater expressed outrage that the Socceroos’ World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh was placed behind a paywall on Paramount Plus, making it inaccessible to fans who didn’t subscribe to the streaming service.

In a News Corp column, Slater wrote, “It was a disgrace that the only way to watch the Socceroos match against Bangladesh was on Paramount +.” He emphasized the significance of the game as a World Cup qualifier and contrasted it with the Matildas’ friendly matches, which receive extensive coverage on Network 10.

Slater believes Network 10 is prioritizing profits from the Matildas’ popularity.

Slater continued, “I received calls from people who wanted to watch the game but couldn’t. The match should’ve been aired on 10’s main channel or, at the very least, on 10 Bold or 10 Peach.” He contrasted this with the Matildas, who receive extensive coverage on Network 10, even for friendly matches.

Slater accused Network 10 of treating the Socceroos and A-League games however they please without facing any consequences. He urged Football Australia (FA) to prioritize the long-term well-being of football in the country and reconsider their relationship with the network. Slater argued that while FA might receive a lower financial offer from another network, football’s popularity and accessibility would ultimately benefit.

Slater highlights the contrasting treatment between the Socceroos and the Matildas, with the Matildas receiving preferential treatment.

Slater concluded by expressing his disappointment with FA’s current stance, suggesting that they are prioritizing financial gains over the interests of Australian football enthusiasts. The Socceroos’ final qualification match against Palestine, scheduled for June 11, will be broadcast live on 10, 10 Play, and Paramount Plus.
