Ben White’s England exile is expected to continue as Lee Carsley prepares to name his first squad.
Arsenal defender Ben White’s self-imposed exile from the England national team is likely to persist, with interim boss Lee Carsley set to announce his first squad on Thursday.
White, 26, left England’s World Cup 2022 camp mid-tournament due to a disagreement with former head coach Gareth Southgate’s No 2, Steve Holland. Although Holland is no longer on the staff, White has not expressed a change in stance, and his omission from the upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Ireland and Finland is anticipated.
The expectation is that White will not be included in Carsley’s party, despite indications that he might reconsider his position once Holland was no longer involved. White’s decision has sparked debate, with some believing he should make himself available for selection, while others think the ball is in his court.
The absence of White and other full-backs, including Luke Shaw, who is injured, and Kieran Trippier, who has question marks over his form, could open the door to newcomers such as Manchester City’s Rico Lewis and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, who can play on both flanks.
Elsewhere, the FA is monitoring Curtis Jones’ availability, with the Liverpool star nursing a slight groin problem. Carsley is keen to incorporate several players he has worked with successfully at Under-21 level into his senior squad, and Jones is among those he rates highly.
Others, such as Morgan Gibbs-White, Morgan Rodgers, and Levi Colwill, may also come into Carsley’s thinking. Jude Bellingham is set to miss the squad through injury, which could pave the way for Cole Palmer to play a key role in the forthcoming matches that will be crucial towards Carsley’s hopes of becoming permanent boss.
However, it remains to be seen whether Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish, James Maddison, and Marcus Rashford will be recalled after missing the Euro 2024 squad.
