When legendary quarterback Tom Brady bid farewell to the NFL in 2023, he left behind a legacy that solidified his position as the most decorated quarterback in history, with a record seven Super Bowl wins under his belt.
In the eyes of many, Brady remains the greatest of all time, with no other quarterback in history having won more than four Super Bowls. His impressive track record with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers speaks volumes about his exceptional skills and unwavering dedication to the sport.
However, is the tide slowly turning in favor of Patrick Mahomes, the phenomenal quarterback who has led the Kansas City Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl victories?
Mahomes’ remarkable performance has thrust him into the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) debate, as he sets his sights on a historic three-peat in the 2024 season. If he achieves this feat, he will have done so in just eight seasons, surpassing Brady’s record of 15 seasons to win four Super Bowls.
Tom Brady remains the greatest NFL quarterback of all time for 85 percent of players
But Patrick Mahomes is slowly making a case to move himself into the GOAT discussion
Recently, a survey of over 100 NFL players was conducted to determine who they believe is the greatest quarterback of all time. While Mahomes is making a strong case for himself, Brady still holds the top spot in the eyes of 85% of the players surveyed.
Only seven players voted for Mahomes as the greatest, with 11 votes going to other unnamed quarterbacks. However, some players did acknowledge that if Mahomes achieves a three-peat, their stance on Brady as the GOAT might change.
One AFC South player stated, “It’s Brady, but if Mahomes three-peats, that’s a different story.” Another player from the NFC South echoed similar sentiments, saying, “No disrespect to Tom… but I’m taking Pat. Pat can do everything Tom can do, and he’s mobile.”
Brady’s record seven Super Bowl wins means he is still considered the greatest by most
Mahomes is eyeing a historic three-peat with the Kansas City Chiefs this season
Some players were swayed by Mahomes’ exceptional talent, but others remained steadfast in their belief that Brady’s historic Super Bowl record cannot be ignored.
One NFC South player stated, “Mahomes is on his way, but he’s not there yet. You can’t disrespect Tom Brady. He has seven rings. That’s a long way to go.”
The survey also asked players to rank their top three current quarterbacks, with Mahomes emerging as the clear winner, receiving 291 points. Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens came in second with 124 points, followed by Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals with 51 points.
Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets rounded out the top five, with Allen also being named the most overrated quarterback in the league and the biggest trash-talker.
Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers and Matthew Stafford of the LA Rams were tied for the most underrated quarterback, while Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears, Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders, and JJ McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings were voted as the rookie quarterbacks with the most promising careers.
