In a disturbing turn of events, Kansas City Chiefs defensive end, Isaiah Buggs, has found himself at the center of animal cruelty accusations in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This incident adds to the list of controversies surrounding the reigning Super Bowl champions during the offseason.
According to reports from the Tuscaloosa Patch, Buggs allegedly left two dogs, a Pitbull and a Rottweiler mix, neglected and abandoned on the back porch of his rented home in Tuscaloosa, the same city where he played college football for the University of Alabama.
Civil documents filed on Wednesday reveal that Buggs is expected to face misdemeanor criminal charges. When authorities arrived at the house, they discovered a heartbreaking scene. The Pitbull was surrounded by its own feces and had no access to food or water. Meanwhile, the Rottweiler mix was locked in a metal cage in direct sunlight, also without food or water.
Isaiah Buggs, a defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is facing allegations of animal cruelty.
Buggs is facing criminal charges for neglecting two dogs
The civil petition describes the dogs as severely “malnourished, emaciated, and neglected.” Neighbors reported that the dogs had been left on the porch for at least ten days. Investigators learned that Buggs’ lease had been terminated in April due to unpaid rent, and witnesses confirmed that he had moved out of the house in March.
Unfortunately, the neglect took a tragic toll on the dogs’ health. The Pitbull had to be euthanized due to aggression and a failed heartworm treatment. Meanwhile, the Rottweiler mix tested positive for parvovirus and was severely underweight, weighing only 52 pounds. It is currently in the care of the Tuscaloosa County Animal Shelter, awaiting a court ruling on its future and that of any other animals Buggs may own.
Authorities have been unable to reach Buggs, and two misdemeanor warrants have been issued for second-degree cruelty to dogs or cats. Buggs was a valuable member of the University of Alabama’s 2018 national championship team and signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad in January 2024 after being released by Detroit.
As of the publication of this article, Buggs remains listed on the Chiefs’ roster on their official website. The Kansas City Chiefs have not provided a comment on the situation.
This incident adds to a string of controversies involving the Chiefs during the offseason. Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice faced allegations of assaulting a photographer outside a Dallas nightclub, although charges were not pursued. However, Rice is also facing legal troubles for a road racing incident that resulted in a multi-vehicle crash and multiple injuries.
Additionally, two Chiefs players, Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick, were arrested in Kansas for misdemeanor marijuana possession and could face fines and jail time. In a separate incident, the team’s star kicker, Harrison Butker, faced backlash for a controversial commencement speech at a Kansas college, leading to a petition for his removal from the team.
The Kansas City Chiefs are navigating a challenging offseason, with multiple players facing legal issues and public scrutiny. The team has yet to provide an official statement regarding the allegations against Buggs and the other players involved in recent controversies.
