The Dallas Cowboys are set to meet with four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Cook is scheduled to fly to meet with the Cowboys on Monday, although it’s unclear how close the two sides are to reaching a deal.
Cook, 29, was one of the NFL’s top running backs during his prime with the Minnesota Vikings. He earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2019 to 2022, amassing over 1,300 yards in each of those seasons.
After undergoing shoulder surgery in the 2023 offseason, Cook was released by the Vikings before training camp. He then signed with the New York Jets, playing 15 games as a backup and posting 214 rushing yards on 3.2 yards per carry – a significant drop from his previous career low of 4.4 yards per carry in 2022.
The Jets released Cook before their season finale, and he subsequently signed with the Baltimore Ravens for the postseason. He carried the ball eight times for 23 yards in Baltimore’s divisional-round win over the Houston Texans but didn’t play in their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship. He has been a free agent throughout the offseason.
How will the Cowboys’ RB room shake out?
The Cowboys are likely meeting with Cook in the hopes that he can regain some of his prior form after a relatively healthy offseason. Dallas is entering the season with a committee of running backs led by 29-year-old Ezekiel Elliott, who rejoined the Cowboys after spending the 2023 season with the New England Patriots. Rico Dowdle and Royce Freeman are listed behind Elliott on the depth chart.
Elliott was the most productive of the three last season, posting 645 yards and three touchdowns on 3.5 yards per carry, as well as 313 yards and two touchdowns on 51 catches, as a part-time starter in New England.
