J.D. Vance Clarifies ‘Cat Lady’ Remark, Says Democrats Misinterpreted Sarcasm
Senator J.D. Vance is standing by his controversial “childless cat ladies” comment, but claims it was meant to be sarcastic. In a recent interview, Vance expressed frustration that his remark was taken out of context.
Vance, who is running alongside Donald Trump, faced scrutiny for his comment on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. When asked about the remark, he said his only regret was that people misinterpreted his intended message, and added, “I’m a real person, I’m gonna make jokes, I’m gonna say things sarcastically.”
Vance argues that his original comment was meant to highlight the struggles of women who want to start families but are hindered by financial constraints. He claims that he and Trump aim to improve their lives, making it possible for them to have children.
Not everyone is buying Vance’s explanation, including media personality Oprah Winfrey, who directly addressed him during her DNC speech.
Vance’s initial comment sparked controversy when he questioned Democratic party leadership, citing examples of childless women like VP Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Despite being given multiple opportunities to walk back his comment, Vance refused, saying, “I regret certainly that a lot of people took it the wrong way, and I certainly regret that the DNC and Kamala Harris lied about it.”
