Renowned sports analyst Stephen A. Smith has been vocal about the Dallas Cowboys’ shortcomings, often ridiculing their failures on national television. However, this season, he’s taking a more cautious approach, suggesting that the team’s playoff hopes are far from certain.
In a recent episode of First Take, Smith expressed his reservations, stating, “I wouldn’t bet my life on the Cowboys making the playoffs…I think the Eagles will take the NFC East.” He further elaborated on the competitiveness of the wild card race, citing the Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and either the Detroit Lions or Green Bay Packers as strong contenders.

Smith’s skepticism stems from concerns about the team’s offensive depth, particularly at the running back position and the wide receiver corps behind CeeDee Lamb. He also highlighted the daunting task of facing seven playoff teams from last season in their first ten games, which could be a significant obstacle for the Cowboys.
His caution is justified, as the NFL’s landscape can shift dramatically from one season to the next. Therefore, it’s unwise to assume any team is a lock for the playoffs.
If the Cowboys fail to secure a postseason berth, it could lead to significant changes within the organization, including the potential departure of head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Dak Prescott, both of whom are in the final years of their contracts.
