Gridiron Gatekeepers Gear Up for Redemption Run

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by Coach Andy Reid, have taken a distinct approach to the preseason. While many teams have opted to sit their starters and key players, the Chiefs have chosen to give theirs playing time in August. This decision is a testament to Reid’s philosophy that the preseason holds value.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP, has been an active participant in the preseason, even throwing some behind-the-back passes. However, in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears, Mahomes did not play, as Reid gave his main players a rest.

The Chiefs’ decision to play their starters in the preseason did come with a cost, as receiver Marquise Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation in the preseason opener. Brown, who was expected to be a significant upgrade for the Chiefs, is expected to miss the start of the regular season but should return early in the season.

The preseason has also given the Chiefs a chance to evaluate their younger players, such as first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy. Worthy’s speed has been on full display, and the Chiefs seem intent on using him extensively. He looks dangerous in the Chiefs’ offense.

Receiver Rashee Rice, who was arrested on multiple charges due to his involvement in a multi-car accident, has not received a suspension from the NFL. This is good news for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are now focused on preparing for the regular season. With their starters getting valuable reps in the preseason, the team is poised to make a strong push for another championship. The Chiefs signed center Creed Humphrey to a new deal, making him the highest-paid center in the NFL, adding to the team’s positive momentum.

In Thursday’s preseason finale, some players were fighting for roster spots or playing time. Receivers Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore played, with Toney having two catches and Hardman returning a kick for 43 yards. Deneric Prince, a second-year running back, also played, trying to solidify a role. Fourth-round safety Jaden Hicks, who might play a significant role on some other teams, was also playing, collecting four tackles and a pass breakup.

The Chiefs are now focused on finalizing their roster and making a few depth chart decisions. With most of last season’s Super Bowl-winning team returning, the Chiefs have continuity on both sides of the ball and should be in midseason form for the Week 1 opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chiefs’ preseason has come to an end, and now they can focus on their march toward history.
