The shooting, which resulted in the loss of one life and left 22 individuals injured, cast a shadow over the joyous occasion.
Biden honored the memory of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who tragically lost her life in the shooting, and recognized the Chiefs for their selfless actions in the face of danger. “We witnessed pride give way to tragedy,” Biden remarked. He went on to acknowledge the players’ individual acts of bravery, such as Trey Smith aiding in pulling people to safety and James, who had experienced the loss of his father to gun violence, comforting and reassuring frightened children.

Biden also shared the story of a teenager who recalled receiving a comforting hug from Coach Reid, who told him to “just breathe.” Additionally, the President highlighted the actions of Clyde, who kept a boy separated from his father safe from harm. The team’s collective response to the shooting exemplified their exceptional character.
Following the shooting, the Chiefs demonstrated their ongoing support and generosity. Star tight end Travis Kelce donated a substantial sum of $100,000 to aid the recovery of two children injured in the incident, and his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, contributed $50,000 to the local United Way fund. Even kicker Harrison Butker, who has been in the news for a controversial speech, showed his support by donating a jersey to Lopez-Galvan’s family for her funeral.

The shooting resulted in charges against two adults and two juveniles, with the adults facing murder charges. The Chiefs’ visit to the White House served as a powerful reminder of the team’s resilience and their commitment to supporting their community, even in the face of tragedy.
