ESPN Announces Mike Greenberg as New Host of ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’
ESPN has revealed that Mike Greenberg will be taking the reins as the new host of ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’, replacing Sam Ponder, who was surprisingly let go by the network last week in a cost-cutting measure.
Ponder and Robert Griffin III were both fired by ESPN, with both earning at least $1 million per year. Now, Greenberg is stepping into Ponder’s seat on the network’s weekly pregame football show.
Laura Rutledge, the host of daily ESPN show ‘NFL Live’, was a candidate for the position. However, it seems that Greenberg’s experience and familiarity with the network made him the top choice for the role.
Greenberg, 47, is a longtime TV and radio voice who has anchored the daily show ‘Get Up’ and has hosted the network’s NFL Draft coverage for the last three years. His promotion is seen as a strategic move by ESPN, which is reportedly designing its weekly sets with the future Super Bowl broadcast in mind.
‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ will return on September 8, featuring a cast that includes Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, Rex Ryan, Alex Smith, and insider Adam Schefter. Meanwhile, Griffin has been replaced on ‘Monday NFL Countdown’ by Jason Kelce.
Griffin took to social media to thank his fanbase for their support, saying, “As I sit here with my family on this beautiful day, we are overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support from you guys over the last past 72+ hours. YOU GUYS ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST.”
With Greenberg at the helm, ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ is expected to bring a new energy and dynamic to the show. Fans will have to tune in to see how the new host fares in his new role.
