Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes suffered a severe head injury during Lille’s Ligue 1 season opener against Reims on Saturday evening.
The 23-year-old, who was part of United’s youth setup between the ages of six and 19, started for Lille and was involved in a perilous aerial collision with Amadou Kone within the opening 15 minutes of the game.
Gomes was left lying on the ground, prompting referee Eric Wattellier to immediately call for medical assistance. The player received on-field treatment for 17 minutes before being transported to the hospital.
Lille’s players formed a circle around Gomes as he received treatment, while the entire crowd chanted his name in support.
Kone, who was shown a straight red card for his dangerous foul, was seen praying for Gomes’ well-being from inside the Reims changing room.
Gomes was applauded by both sets of fans as he left the pitch on a stretcher.
