Former England international Gary Neville has become the target of online ridicule after attempting to lift the spirits of students receiving their A-level results. Neville, who co-founded University Academy 92 (UA92) with his ex-Manchester United teammates Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes, took to the phones to offer words of encouragement to disappointed students.
UA92 is expecting a significant increase in student intake this year, with over 500 students set to join the institution. In an effort to combat the decline in further education applications, Neville donned a headset and attempted to channel his inner motivational speaker.
The results, however, were met with widespread mockery on social media, with many users poking fun at Neville’s attempts to console students. One user joked that receiving a motivational speech from Neville was akin to getting a team talk from the former Valencia manager.
In the video, Neville is heard telling a student named Charlie, “Life is like a game of football, you win some, you lose some, and you draw some.” He went on to reassure Charlie that there were plenty of examples of students who had recovered from disappointment on results day and gone on to achieve success.
Despite the good intentions, Neville’s words of wisdom fell flat with many online, who couldn’t resist making light of the situation. One user quipped that Neville’s motivational speaking was as bad as his team talks at Valencia, while another joked that receiving a pep talk from the former right-back would only serve to make things worse.
UA92, which boasts a unique approach to education, including no end-of-year exams, is a collaboration between the University of Lancaster and the Class of 92. The institution aims to provide students with a more holistic learning experience, focusing on personal development and career readiness.

Despite the online ridicule, Neville’s efforts were praised by some, who acknowledged the good intentions behind his actions.
One user defended Neville’s punditry skills, stating that he was “great at analysing” and “by far and away the best pundit” they had ever known. However, they did concede that his motivational speaking skills left much to be desired.
The incident has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many users sharing their own experiences of disappointing A-level results and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
