Christian McCaffrey Makes a Splash with the 49ers: $38M Extension and a Veiled Preseason Appearance

Christian McCaffrey has inked a lucrative two-year extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. The deal is worth a staggering $38 million, or $19 million per season, solidifying McCaffrey’s status as an elite player in the league.

The 27-year-old star, who was instrumental in the 49ers’ Super Bowl run in 2023, had already been the highest-paid running back following a four-year, $64 million extension in 2020. Now, he’s raised the bar even higher with this latest contract.

McCaffrey’s exceptional performance in the 2023 season, where he rushed for 14 touchdowns and an impressive 1,459 yards, earned him the title of offensive player of the year. His talent and impact on the field are undeniable, and the 49ers clearly recognize his value to the team.

The new extension provides McCaffrey with an additional $8 million in the first two years compared to his previous contract, along with an impressive $24 million in guarantees. This deal extends through the 2027 season, securing his future with the 49ers for the foreseeable future.

Prior to this extension, Alvin Kamara of the Saints held the second spot in running back salaries, earning $15 million per year following a five-year, $75 million extension in 2020. McCaffrey has now widened the gap, further emphasizing his value and impact on the field.

Last month, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan expressed uncertainty about McCaffrey’s absence from the beginning of OTAs. However, McCaffrey’s presence at the mandatory minicamp on Tuesday put those concerns to rest. Shanahan also noted that he was “not too concerned” about the absence of other players, including Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings.

McCaffrey, along with quarterback Brock Purdy, played a pivotal role in the 49ers’ impressive 12-5 season and Super Bowl appearance, where they ultimately fell to the Kansas City Chiefs. With this new extension, the 49ers are investing in McCaffrey’s continued success and impact on the team’s performance.
