Miley Cyrus, the 31-year-old actress and singer, has been reminiscing about her transformation from a wholesome Disney Channel star to a provocative pop sensation. At the Disney Legends award ceremony, Cyrus spoke candidly about her journey, acknowledging the challenges she faced as she tried to shake off her Hannah Montana image.
Cyrus, who starred in Hannah Montana from 2006 to 2011, recalled auditioning for the role in Disney’s Burbank, California, office, joking that it’s rumored to be where “they create all of us Disney kids.” She also poked fun at her past, saying, “I definitely wasn’t created in a lab, but if I was, there must’ve been a bug in the system which caused me to malfunction somewhere between the years of 2013 and 2016.”
After leaving Disney Channel behind, Cyrus cultivated a more mature image, releasing her first non-Disney album, Bangerz, in 2013. The pop star’s provocative performances, including her infamous twerking incident with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, sparked controversy and criticism.

Despite the controversy, Cyrus remains proud of her journey, saying, “I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana.” She dedicated her Disney Legend award to her former alter-ego and her loyal fans, quoting Hannah Montana’s iconic line, “This is the life.”
In the past, Cyrus has spoken about the challenges she faced as she transitioned from a Disney Channel star to a 20-something pop star. She has said that her provocative performances were a way of asserting her independence and exploring her own identity.
Cyrus has said that her VMAs performance was a way of breaking free from her Disney Channel image and embracing her own identity. “Me coming out of that teddy bear, to me, wasn’t just a teddy bear. My dad always explained it to me that you step into your happiness,” she explained. “That’s kind of like what I was doing. When I broke down the bear belly, I was really breaking out — my show ended, and then I didn’t really work for two years. That’s when I did my most self-exploration. [The performance] was kind of going into this way of saying, ‘I’m just going to do what will make me happy.’ At that moment, that’s what really made me happy.”
