Fans Slam Manchester City’s Unconventional Font on Community Shield Shirts
Manchester City supporters have taken to social media to express their discontent with the unique font featured on the club’s shirts during the Community Shield match.
Pep Guardiola’s side faced off against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium, seeking to avenge their FA Cup final defeat in May. Although City dominated the match, their shirt design sparked controversy among fans online.
The font, which adorned the back of the shirts, was widely criticized, with one fan calling it a “disgrace” and another comparing it to a “Sharpie scribble.”
Fans were quick to share their disapproval on social media, with one joking that the font should be added to the “115 charges” against the club. Another fan quipped that City had managed to find a worse font than Comic Sans.
Fortunately for disgruntled fans, the font will not be featured on City’s shirts for the upcoming Premier League campaign. According to league rules, all clubs must use a standardized font, which was redesigned by American company Avery Dennison prior to the 2023-24 season.
City ultimately emerged victorious in the match, winning on penalties after the game ended 1-1. Manuel Akanji scored the winning spot kick, securing City’s first Community Shield title since 2019.
Despite the controversy surrounding the font, City’s victory marked a triumphant start to their season. The club will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their Premier League opener.
Fans from both clubs couldn’t help but express their disdain for the typeface on social media.
Both teams had chances to take the lead in the first half, with City youngster James McAtee coming closest as his curling effort struck the bar. United looked the more likely to score after the interval, and Garnacho eventually gave his side the lead with a blistering run and finish.
However, City fought back, and Bernardo Silva headed home from an Oscar Bobb cross in the final minute of normal time to send the game to spot kicks. City ultimately emerged victorious, winning 5-4 on penalties.
