Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce Shine in Preseason Opener
Despite a busy offseason, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce picked up where they left off, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a strong performance in their preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The star quarterback and tight end, who have won three Super Bowls together in the last five years, played only one series but still managed to make an impact. Mahomes completed 3 of 4 passes for 27 yards, including a 7-yard reception by Kelce.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid opted to give his starters only one series before bringing in the backups, including former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who completed all four of his passes against his former coach Doug Pederson’s team.
Mahomes, who has been known to take a few hits in the preseason, joked that he doesn’t mind absorbing a hit from a defender, as long as it’s not too hard. “I always want to get hit, but not hit hard,” he said. “So, if I can just throw the ball and one of those defensive ends just wants to give me a little push, that’s all I need.”
The Chiefs’ coaching staff is focused on evaluating players competing for starting spots or roster spots, with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo wanting to see how young players handle competition. “Guys that haven’t had a lot of time back there, I’d like to see those guys,” Spagnuolo said. “You know all the young guys, obviously.”
The Chiefs are aiming for their fourth Super Bowl title, and with Mahomes and Kelce leading the charge, they’re off to a strong start.
