A reporter from the Golf Channel mistook an assistant college football coach for former NFL quarterback Vince Young during a live interview on Thursday. The reporter, Lauren Withrow, intended to speak with Young, who is participating in the BMW Charity Pro-Am in South Carolina. However, she accidentally interviewed Citadel assistant coach Everette Sands.
As Withrow began listing Young’s accomplishments, Sands politely interrupted, identifying himself and clarifying that she had the wrong person. Despite the mistake, Sands handled the situation gracefully, and even Withrow took it in stride, later acknowledging the gaffe on her Instagram story with the message, “Learn from the mistakes” and “Up from here!!!”.
The mix-up quickly went viral on X, with 2.7 million views at the time of writing, and even caught the attention of Fox Sports analyst and former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, who expressed disbelief at the error. Sands, a good sport, also took to X to share his experience, saying he had a great time at the event and even got interviewed.
Vince Young, the former No. 3 overall pick by the Titans and the 2006 NCAA national champion at Texas, last played in the NFL in the 2011 season.

The reporter had intended to interview Vince Young (left), a former NFL QB. Sands is seen in his Citadel headshot on the right.
Sands continued the interview gracefully, stating, “The great thing about golf is I’m not only competing against myself but I’m competing against everybody else.”
Withrow asked one more question before ending the interview. Unfortunately, the mistake quickly went viral on X, garnering 2.7 million views.
Even Fox Sports analyst and former NFL player Emmanuel Acho weighed in, expressing disbelief at the error.
“There is no way… Absolutely, no way, they thought this man, Everette Sands, was my guy, Vince Young,” he wrote on X, along with a picture of Sands’ Citadel coaching headshot.
Sands, a good sport, later shared his experience on X, saying, “Had a great time at @BMWProAm today. I even got interviewed after one of the holes!!!!”
Withrow acknowledged her mistake on her Instagram story, writing “Learn from the mistakes” and “Up from here!!!”
