HBO’s House of the Dragon to Conclude After Four Seasons, Creator Confirms

The fantasy epic, House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, will come to an end after four seasons, according to the show’s co-creator and showrunner, Ryan Condal.

Condal made the announcement during a news conference, following the finale of the show’s second season. He also revealed that the third season is currently in the writing process, with pre-production set to begin this autumn and filming scheduled to start early next year.

When asked about the number of episodes in the third season, Condal remained tight-lipped, saying he hadn’t had discussions with HBO about it. However, he hinted that the show’s dramatic storytelling pace would continue to unfold similarly to the second season.

Novelist George R.R. Martin, a co-creator of the Game of Thrones spinoff, previously stated that four full seasons of 10 episodes each would be needed to do justice to the story.

Game of Thrones, which is based on Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire, had an eight-season run on HBO from 2011-2019. The cable network is also working on an adaptation of Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another prequel to Game of Thrones, set 100 years before the events of the original series.

Condal explained that the reason the second season finale didn’t feature a storyline patterned after the Battle of the Gullet was because they wanted to give it the time and space it deserves. He assured fans that the event will happen soon in the storytelling of House of the Dragon and will be the biggest thing they’ve pulled off to date.

Fans of the series were seen in costume at the show’s season two premiere in London. Condal spoke about the show’s future, saying that he knows fans want the show to come out every summer, but the complexity of the show requires more time.

He also spoke about the fate of Otto Hightower, played by Rhys Ifans, who was seen in a quick glimpse on Sunday’s episode, saying that his tale has not yet come to an end.
